Job Description

The Department of Art and Art History invites applications for the position of Director of the Master’s Program in Art and Museum Studies.   Founded in 2006, the program has over one hundred graduates, many now in museums, galleries, and other art institutions.  One of Georgetown’s most selective M.A. programs, AMUS enrolls about 15 students each year.  The curriculum combines art history and museum practice, emphasizes internships, and offers the opportunity for students to spend one semester studying at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London or New York.

Designated as a full-time term appointment, with competitive salary and benefits, the position combines faculty and administrative staff responsibilities. The Director of AMUS reports to the Chair and the Director of Graduate Studies of the Department of Art and Art History. The initial contract is for three years, beginning August 1, 2014, with the expectation of continuing on a three-year renewal cycle.  We seek candidates with experience in academic and museum management, who are conversant with the field of museum studies and who have expertise in one or more areas of museum practice.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will teach the program’s introductory core course fall semester and one other course (open to undergraduate and graduate students) in spring.  The administrative role includes: recruiting and supporting AMUS faculty (under supervision of the department Chair); supervising the graduate admissions process; orientation and academic advising of students (with the Director of Graduate Studies); monitoring the progress of internships and developing new internship contacts; maintaining regular communication with program directors at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London and New York; and coordinating projects with the department’s Gallery Director.  The Director will be the program’s primary representative in meetings and events connected with Georgetown College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and with museums and other arts institutions, and will play a key role in the ongoing development of the program.  General information  may be found at http://art.georgetown.edu/museum-studies/ and more detailed information on expectations and responsibilities of the position will be available to those invited for interviews.
